Lowell was a highly successful member of that group of American artists and illustrators who favoured living in Rochelle, New York State, among them Norman Rockwell and Charles Dana Gibson.
It is likely that this humorous work was the original for one of the great American magazines that proliferated at the turn of the century – it does tell a story.
