A painter of portraits, figurative and genre subjects in oils and watercolours, and also an etcher and miniaturist. He was born at Rochester in Kent and studied at the Royal College of Art in 1885 and then in Paris. He ehich he was a founder member, the Royal Society of Painters in Oils, the Birmingham Society of Artists and the British Watercolour Society. He held solo exhibitions in Manchester, Sunderland and London, and his work is represented in public collections including Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery. Spencelayh is especially famous for his cluttered interiors with old men, which were painted in great detail. His work reflects his admiration for Frith. Both his characters and their environment were depicted with great accuracy and often had a nostalgic narrative content. He died at Northampton in 1958.
